The importance of foreign object retrieval
FOSAR is a very important part of non-destructive testing. It includes the detection and recovery of foreign parts and objects, which have unintentionally entered plant components, vessels or machines. During repairs and routine checks it can easily occur that foreign objects such as screws, nuts, components or even tools are being lost or simply forgotten inside an application. Also, it is not uncommon that during work, such small items accidentally slip into plant components, containers or pipes from which they cannot be removed without the aid of retrieval tools.
Leaving such foreign objects in industrial plants, machines or components can have fatal consequences. If they are not recovered, this might result in corrosion or contamination and thus damage the plant. Furthermore, this can lead to considerable operational disruptions up to production stops or, in the worst case, even cause safety risks.
